Telephone Extensions

An extension puts a working phone point in the room you need it, run neatly from your master socket or, these days, from your router. Since the switchover the wiring works slightly differently, but the job is the same one I've been doing for three decades: a tidy cable run and a socket that works properly.

What the job involves

Priced by the run. Extra sockets on the same visit cost much less than a return trip.

  • A cable run planned so it's as invisible as it can reasonably be
  • Proper sockets fitted and punched down correctly, not twisted and taped
  • Extensions fed from the router where the line has already been switched over
  • Existing bad extensions put right rather than left in the wall

Questions

Extensions — the usual questions

Can I still have extensions after the copper switch-off?

Yes — that hasn't changed, only where the dial tone comes from has. Instead of feeding off the incoming line, the extensions feed from the phone socket on your router. Same cable, same sockets, same result.

How many extensions can I have?

For a normal house, as many as you sensibly want. There's a limit to how many phones one line will ring properly, but in practice you'll run out of rooms before you run out of capacity.

Can you get a line out to the garage or a garden office?

Usually yes, and it's a fairly common job. It needs proper external-grade cable and a sensible route rather than a bit of indoor flex out the window — but it's very doable, and often a hardwired network point out there is worth doing at the same time.

Can you use the extension cable that's already there?

Very often, yes, and it saves you money. I'll test what's in the walls first — if it's sound, we reuse it. If it's the old two-wire stuff or it's been damaged, I'll tell you before pulling anything new through.
