Phone Socket Installation, Moves & Rewiring
Sound familiar?
These are the reasons people ring me about this.
- The socket is behind where the sofa or the wardrobe needs to go
- You're having building work or a rewire and want the cabling done before plastering
- The wiring is a mess of joints, chocolate blocks and old cable
- A socket is loose, broken or hanging off the wall
- You've moved in and inherited someone else's wiring
What the job involves
Quoted per job once I've seen what's there. Pre-wire on building work is priced per point.
- New sockets supplied and fitted, flush or surface mounted
- Existing sockets moved, including the cable run to the new position
- First-fix and pre-wire on building and renovation jobs
- Old wiring, redundant joints and dead cable stripped out
- Everything punched down to standard and labelled where it helps
Questions
Sockets & rewiring — the usual questions
Can you move a socket to the other side of the room?
Yes. How it's done depends on the room — under the floor, through the loft, in trunking or chased into the wall and made good. I'll talk you through the options and what each one costs before starting.
We're having an extension built. When should you come?
Before the plasterboard goes on, ideally. Getting cable in while the walls are open costs a fraction of what it costs afterwards, and you end up with everything hidden. A quick conversation at first-fix stage saves a lot of money later.
Is it worth rewiring the phone points in an older house?
It depends what's there. If it's sound cable that's just been jointed badly, tidying it up is usually enough. If it's genuinely old two-wire cable that's gone brittle, it's better replaced — especially if you want to use those same runs for broadband or network later.
Do you do work in flats and blocks?
Yes. Block work needs a bit more care around communal areas and permissions, but it's work I've done plenty of. Landlords and managing agents are welcome to get in touch.
