Router & Master Socket Relocation

Your master socket went wherever the cable happened to come into the house, and your router has been stuck next to it ever since — usually a cold hallway, behind a door, at the far end from where anyone actually sits. It doesn't have to stay there. Moving it properly, rather than running a long cable along the skirting, fixes weak Wi-Fi at the source.

What the job involves

Priced per job depending on the run and whether cable needs hiding. I'll quote before starting.

  • A look at where the line comes in and where the router would be better off
  • Moving the master socket, or running a proper extension to the new position
  • Cable clipped, capped or chased in neatly — not draped along the floor
  • Router and any ONT box remounted and retested in the new spot
  • Speed checked at the router before and after, so you can see the difference

Moving your router — the usual questions

Am I allowed to move the master socket?

The master socket itself belongs to Openreach, so strictly it's theirs to move — and they charge for it. What I can do instead, and what most people go for, is run a proper new socket from the master to wherever you want the router, which achieves the same thing at a fraction of the cost.

Will moving the router slow the broadband down?

Done properly, no. Done badly — cheap cable, poor joints, a long run on old extension wiring — yes, it certainly can. That's the whole difference between a proper job and a bodge, and it's why I test the speed at the router before and after.

I'm getting full fibre installed. Should I get you in first or after?

Ring me before if you can. If you know where you want the box to end up, it's much easier to have that sorted so the fibre engineer can put it in the right place first time, rather than having to move it afterwards.

Can you hide the cable?

Yes. Depending on the room it can go in trunking, under the carpet edge, through the loft, along skirting or chased into the wall. Tell me how invisible you want it and I'll tell you what it takes.
