Data Cabling & Cable Tidy-Ups
Sound familiar?
These are the reasons people ring me about this.
- You work from home and want a rock-solid wired connection at the desk
- Gaming lag you're sure isn't the broadband's fault
- The TV buffers even though everything else is fine
- There's a bird's nest of old cable behind the TV or up the outside wall
- You're having work done and want network points put in now
- You need a cable out to a garden office or annexe
What the job involves
Priced per point, with the price per point dropping the more you have done at once.
- Cat6 runs from a sensible central point to wherever you need them
- Sockets terminated to standard and each run tested, not just plugged in and hoped for
- Cable routed through loft, floor or trunking — properly clipped, not draped
- Switch or patch point set up so it's tidy and expandable
- Old redundant satellite, aerial and phone cable removed inside and out
Questions
Data cabling — the usual questions
Is a cable really better than good Wi-Fi?
For anything stationary, yes, noticeably. A cable gives you the full speed, all the time, with none of the drop-outs — and it takes that device off the Wi-Fi, which makes the Wi-Fi better for everything else too. For a home office it's the single best upgrade there is.
Cat5e or Cat6?
I fit Cat6 as standard now. The price difference is small and it gives you plenty of headroom for whatever broadband speeds arrive over the next decade — you don't want to be pulling cable through the same walls twice.
Will you have to make a mess of the walls?
Usually far less than people expect. Most runs go through the loft or under floorboards, and where I do have to go through a wall it's one neat hole. I'm known for being tidy — it's been in my adverts for thirty years for a reason.
Can you take away the old cables outside the house?
Yes, and it makes a bigger difference to how a house looks than people expect. Old Sky cable, dead aerial runs and abandoned phone drops all come off, and I make good where the fixings were.
